The BAD News:

  • Memory decline begins as early as age 30
  • Loss in function due to aging brain machinery
  • Processing speeds slows
  • Loss of speech comprehension
3
The GOOD News
  • The Brain is PLASTIC
  • Able to generate brain cells
  • Able to reorganize itself
  • … at any age!

  • (This is a relatively recent discovery.)
4
The BIG problem
  • As we age, we get stuck in the same routine.
  • Our brain needs to LEARN NEW THINGS to stay healthy.
5
Older folks tend to …
  • not challenge themselves
  • only do activities they are really good at
  • not be active physically

6
Scientific Research indicates …
  • You can slow or even reverse brain decline through:
    • Diet
    • Exercise
    • Brain calisthentics (“neurobics”)
7
The Effect of Diet
  • Best bet is fish (omega-3 fatty acids)
  • Doctors recommend fish 2 or more times/wk.
  • Sardines are good brain food.
  • 60% less risk of Alzheimer’s
  • 10% better (slower decline) on memory tests
8
The Effect of Exercise
  • Physical exercise helps keep your brain in shape.
    • Increases blood circulation and oxygen to brain
    • Promotes growth of new brain cells
    • Studies show people who walk regularly show improvement in memory and learning ability (and cuts stroke risk)
    • Even a little is good, but more is better
9
Brain Calisthenics
  • To stay healthy, your brain needs:
    • to LEARN something new
    • to CONCENTRATE
    • To use input from all your senses
10
“Brain-training” programs have …
  • Enhanced cognitive function
  • Improved memory
  • Improved control of movements
11
“Neurobics” is the latest trend
  • With video games
  • Software
  • Websites
  • All aimed at exercising the brain!
12
Some great brain exercises
  • Learn to play a musical instrument
  • Learn how to use a computer
  • Learn a new language
  • Do crossword puzzles
  • Memorize poetry
  • Take a course in something you know nothing about
  • Learn to play chess
13
More exercise …
  • Work jigsaw puzzles
  • Brush your teeth with your “other” hand
  • Identify a pile of coins by feel
  • Learn and use a new word everyday
  • Learn how to play bridge (card game)
  • Take a course in logic
  • Take the emergency medical training
14
The Future
  • Drugs
    • No perfect “brain” drug yet, but …
      scientist are working on it
    • Cognitive enhancers
      • Modafinil: can keep you awake and alert for 90 hrs straight with no jitters or bad concentration
      • Other new drugs to improve memory without side effects
      • Ampakines: makes an older person perform mentally like a much younger person
15
Technology
  • Brain transplant? Yes, maybe!
    • At USC, computer chip implanted to replace part of a brain (in a rat)
    • 2006 experiment: inserted  nanotechnology fibers into a blind hamster’s brain and brain was able to reconnect and restore sight.
